One of our flocks is Maeid-Visna accredited, and therefore requires all animals to be blood tested every two years. Tests are also available to qualify for the Scrapie Monitoring Scheme. Being accredited for these diseases increases the value of the stock, enabling export of genetics, sales to other breeders and to commercial farmers.
Blood sampling can play an important role in an abortion enquiry. This is where lambing records are important, as looking back you may realise that a high percentage of ewes were barren or aborted and blood samples can be taken to look for exposure to enzootic abortion or toxoplasmosis. Free blood sampling is available for toxoplasmosis.
